Scrum master is the servant leader for the team and manager of the Scrum process. They
are supposed to inspire the workforce and support the Scrum framework. Scrum masters
need to serve development teams, product owners and the organization and enable them
to visualize and benefit from an iterative and incremental approach. Scrum master needs
to reflect the state of Scrum in the organization and aid in improving areas. This person
should personify Scrum and Agile.
Responsibilities:
Coaching & assessing:
Coach the organization, product owners and development teams on how to use Scrum
practices and values to delight customers
Coaching the Scrum team on how to get the most out of self-organization
Assessing the Scrum maturity of the team and organization and coaching the team to
higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and comfortable for the team and
organization
Tasks:
1. Analyze how Scrum is implemented across organization and the Scrum team
2. Assess how leaders around the Scrum teams are responding to Scrum and mentor them
accordingly
3. Scrum master needs to walk around the Gemba and guide the Scrum process
4. Coaching product owners, development teams and the organization in understanding
Scrum
5. Coaching product owners to maximize the value of product backlogs and the work
they get from development teams
6. Coaching the development teams in self organization and cross functionality
7. Coach development teams to create high value products
8. Help stakeholders understand empirical product development

  • Facilitating:
    Facilitate Scrum events as necessary
    Remove impediments of Scrum team which are beyond their self-organizing ability
    Tasks:
    1. Facilitate Scrum events of the teams and collaborate with necessary stakeholders

2. Facilitating getting the work done without coercion, assigning, or dictating the work
3. Facilitating discussion, decision making, and conflict resolution
4. Provide all support to the team using servant leadership style and lead by example
5. Strongly serving and supporting the Product Owner and Development Team in their
quest to do everything possible to delight customers
6. Assisting with internal and external communication, improving transparency, and
radiating information

  • Training:
    Identify the training needs if any and facilitate necessary trainings
    Tasks:
    1. Teach the scrum teams and organization on Scrum and relevant Agile principles,
    practices and values
    2. Teach the product owners in effective product backlog management techniques
    3. Teach about self-organization abilities of the team, visualization of work progress, and
    how to be a better-knit team
  • Managing:
    Impediments and eliminate waste
    Scrum process
    Team health - Building a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised
    without fear of blame, retribution, or being judged, with an emphasis of healing and
    problem solving
    Boundaries of self-organization
    Culture of the teams and the organization
    Tasks:
    1. Surface problems up the chain of command and work with those in power to resolve
    the impediments
    2. Take necessary steps to ensure that people, teams, and the organization realize the
    highest benefits from using Scrum.
    3. Build safe environment where people will be able to embrace failures
    4. Causing change that increases the productivity of the Scrum Team
    5. Work with other scrum masters in the organization to increase the effectiveness of the
    application of Scrum in the organization
    6. Guiding and coaching the Scrum Team on self-organizing to fill in the intentional gaps
    left in the Scrum framework

Requirements:
Is a Servant Leader
The ability to distinguish between what is Scrum what is not Scrum
Experience playing the Scrum Master role for at least two to three years for a Scrum
Team
Excellent leadership, negotiation, communication and facilitation skills
Knowledge of various retrospective, gamification, and visualization techniques
