Job Description

A purchasing manager is involved in every aspect of the business operations from the development of a product to comparing supplier costs to strategic planning to production. Duties include reviewing new project proposals, interacting with both the marketing and sales team to create effective marketing strategies and handling contract negotiations with vendors. A typical job progression for a purchasing manager is to an executive role with more control and responsibilities.
Companies often require a bachelor's degree in business, economics or engineering for the position of a purchasing manager with larger organizations requiring a master's degree. There is a need for prior experience working in a purchasing department followed by strong strategic and analytical skills to assess supplier performance based on quality, cost and reliability. The flexibility to travel to meet with suppliers, vendors and other personnel is necessary.
