About The Role

If you want to learn about Verizon Media's Big Data platform and manage a large scale system; this is the job for you. We are looking for experienced and motivated devOps/SRE engineer, with sound coding skills to help build and enhance solutions to ensure the availability & reliability of our Hadoop infrastructure. If you have strong distributed systems background, love to solve complex and challenging problems, can work independently, and want to gain expertise in some of the most exciting open source projects, we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities

  • Work on a combination of tasks & projects such as analyzing and assisting in the resolution of production software and infrastructure issues, reporting, deployments, monitoring, automation, and designing for redundancy/business - continuity planning.

  • Understand all aspects of Verizon Media s Big Data Stack and learn select components in depth.

  • Work closely with engineering, operations, and Hadoop users to engineer cutting - edge solutions that allow Verizon Media to answer today's most challenging big data questions.

  • Work in tight collaboration with Verizon Media Hadoop development team during the development lifecycle to ensure operability and reliability of new products, feature enhancements & research experiments.

  • Scripting, Networking, Capacity planning and performance tuning

  • 12x7 oncall

Qualifications

  • B.E/B.Tech in Computer Science or equivalent

  • Minimum 2+ years of industry experience, preferably at large scale

  • Prior experience supporting 24x7, highly - available systems

  • Hands - on expertise in administering, supporting, debugging and tuning Unix/Linux systems and technologies

  • Solid understanding of best practices around operations, software development, release engineering & continuous delivery.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Minimum skill set required

  • Hands - on exposure to and in - depth understanding of the Unix/Linux Operating System

  • Sound knowledge of Systems Management: Apache Traffic Servers, load balancing, Caching, TCP/IP, DNS, Kerberos, Monitoring, Traffic Management, Log Collection and Aggregation

  • Excellent Troubleshooting & Analytical skills

  • Working knowledge of programming paradigms and coding skills in Perl/Python/Ruby/Shell

Good to Have skills

  • Exposure to and understanding of Network Technologies like TCP/IP, sockets, routers, switches, load balancers, VIPs

  • Exposure to and understanding of Internet technologies like http servers, caching systems, DNS, GSLB techniques

  • Exposure to and understanding of Data storage/File system technologies like mysql, Oracle, NoSQL, HDFS, NFS, SAN/NAS, RAIDExperience or familiarity with Internet Scale systems / Large scale production systems

  • Experience in supporting platforms built on Java/J2EE technologies

  • Knowledge on Infrastructure Management tools like Chef/Puppet and Openstack

  • Working knowledge or experience with DevOps practices, Release management

  • Automation experience in infrastructure monitoring

  • Knowledge of Developer and Collaboration tools like JIVE, GIT, JIRA and Hudson/Jenkins.

  • Experience in supporting Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, HBase, and associated Service Products
