Job Description
The Job Description (JD) for a Naval Architect typically involves the following duties and responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Development:
- Design the structure, stability, and integrity of marine vessels, including ships, submarines, yachts, and offshore structures.
- Develop blueprints, models, and CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawings for various maritime vessels.
- Ensure compliance with international and local regulations related to safety, environmental impact, and operational efficiency.
Project Management:
- Oversee all phases of the construction and design process from initial concept to final delivery.
- Manage and coordinate with other engineers, designers, and specialists to ensure seamless project execution.
- Supervise the building process to ensure the design is accurately implemented.
Analysis and Testing:
- Perform various calculations to ensure the structural and hydrodynamic performance of vessels (e.g., stability, strength, and resistance).
- Conduct simulations, model testing, and sea trials to validate designs.
- Ensure that designs adhere to industry standards, safety protocols, and environmental laws.
Maintenance and Refurbishment:
- Provide consultancy services regarding maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of existing vessels.
- Advise on the enhancement of vessel design for improving operational efficiency or meeting new regulatory standards.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with clients, suppliers, and contractors to ensure the design meets the client's requirements.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with all necessary standards and requirements.
- Maintain effective communication with project stakeholders throughout the development and execution phases.
Cost Management and Budgeting:
- Estimate project costs and prepare detailed budget proposals.
- Manage financial resources effectively, ensuring projects remain within budget and on schedule.
Required Skills:
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of marine engineering principles, hydrodynamics, structural mechanics, and materials science.
- Software Expertise: Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD, Rhino, and SolidWorks) and other naval architecture tools for analysis (such as ANSYS or MATLAB).
- Problem Solving: Ability to address complex technical challenges related to vessel design and construction.
- Attention to Detail: Precision in calculations, design, and inspections to ensure safety and reliability.
- Project Management Skills: Ability to manage teams, schedules, and budgets effectively.
Qualifications:
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field is typically required. A Master's degree or further specialization may be preferred for senior positions.
- Certifications: In some regions, certifications from professional bodies such as the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) or equivalent may be required.
- Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience in the maritime or shipbuilding industry, with exposure to design, construction, and analysis.
