Role: Senior Oracle Application Database Administrator - Performance Tuning
Duration: Contract
Location: Remote (Local to Hyderabad)
Work timing: UK Hours (2:30pm to 11pm IST)
Job Description:
As a Senior Oracle Application DBA focused on performance tuning, you will own the health, scalability, and resilience of mission-critical Oracle databases (11g19c). Partnering with development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams, you will analyze AWR/ASH reports, fine-tune SQL and PL/SQL, and automate daily administration to deliver low-latency, high-throughput data services for enterprise applications. In addition to core administration, you will profile, refactor, and debug large PL/SQL packages, procedures, and functions in partnership with engineering teams, driving end-to-end performance improvements.Key Responsibilities:
Performance Tuning & Diagnostic:
- Trace and optimize PL/SQL call stacks (DBMS_PROFILER, SQL Trace/TKPROF) and recommend data-model or code refactors.
- Identify bottlenecks with OEM, AWR/ASH, SQL Trace/TKPROF; optimize execution plans and indexing strategies.
- Recommend schema refactors, partitioning, and in-memory options for sustained throughput.
Core Database Administration:
- Manage RMAN backup/restores, patching, upgrades, and security hardening across DEV, QA, PROD.
- Configure and maintain HA/DR architectures (Data Guard, RAC, Flashback).
PL/SQL & Code-Level Optimization:
- Profile and refactor PL/SQL procedures/functions that exceed SLA thresholds ( 1 s per call or 5 % CPU).
- Mentor developers on writing set-based logic, bulk-collect patterns, and instrumentation best practices.
Database Design & Architecture:
- Collaborate with architects on data models, storage, and growth projections; evaluate Advanced Compression, in-memory features.
Capacity Planning & Monitoring:
- Track resource utilization, forecast future needs, and enhance dashboards/alerts for proactive incident prevention.
Incident Response & Troubleshooting:
- Serve as the primary escalation point for production PL/SQL logic failures (e.g., deadlocks inside packages, exception handling gaps).
- Serve as escalation for production-critical issues (locks, contention, replication lag); perform root-cause analysis and implement permanent fixes.
Documentation & Knowledge Sharing:
- Maintain architecture diagrams, run books, tuning guides; lead knowledge-transfer sessions for peers and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years as an Oracle DBA (11g19c) with proven success leading large-scale performance-tuning initiatives.
- Mastery of OEM, AWR/ASH, SQL Plan Management, indexing, partitioning, caching, and advanced tuning techniques.
- Hands-on proficiency with RMAN, Data Guard, RAC/Clusterware, ASM, and Oracle security best practices.
- Expert-level PL/SQL development experience (profiling, debugging, refactoring, bulk operations, pipelined functions)., and at least one scripting language (Python, Bash, PowerShell) for automation.
- Excellent analytical and communication skillsable to translate technical findings for diverse audiences.
Nice-to-Have:
- Practical exposure to application-layer APM tools (New Relic, Dynatrace) for correlating SQL wait events with code traces.
- Exposure to Exadata or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI); familiarity with AWS/Azure/GCP.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, IaC, or DevOps tooling (Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins).
- Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, MySQL, or NoSQL platforms for heterogeneous environments.
