Job Description

Role & responsibilities

  • To prevent susceptible patients acquiring pathogenic (disease-causing) micro-organisms.
  • To limit the spread of antimicrobial resistant infections.
  • Ensure IC best practices are implemented, and the hospital is fully IC compliant.
  • Conducts audits as per schedule to ensure compliance.
  • Core team - IC meetings.
  • Educates IC Practices to all stakeholders.
  • Lead role in employee vaccination against infectious disease.
  • Responsible for design, delivery & evaluation of academic & continuing education programs.
  • Ensure standards of Nursing protocol are strictly maintained through robust training, evaluating and monitoring of performance.

Assist with implementation and maintenance of standardized clinical protocols, participate in clinical Committees

Responsible for the implementation of the Hospital IC program

  • To conduct IC surveillance activities of Operation Theatres, Intensive Care Units, all nursing areas, OPD and other critical areas, CSSD, Blood storage, Bio medical waste storage, Pharmacy, Caf, Lab as per schedule.
  • To compile and analyze hospital infection data daily; escalate outliers and follow up for compliance.
  • To periodically monitor the use of disinfectants.
  • To regularly monitor Infection Control Practices.
  • To investigate outbreaks.
  • To carry out any other projects as assigned by Infection Control Officer.
  • To be aware of the NABH & NE standards and implement the same.
  • To maintain patient confidentiality.
  • To monitor patient safety on hospital acquired infections and medication safety on surgical prophylaxis.
  • To conduct regular training on IC protocols for all health professionals
  • Responsible for all employee vaccinations against infectious disease
  • To conduct monthly audits to ensure IC compliance in the hospital
  • To coordinate and monitor results of Culture water, air, swab; ensure timely action on positive reports.
  • To supervise timely Hepa-filter validation.
  • To oversee practice of Hand hygiene, bio medical waste management & HAI care bundles.
  • To visit bio medical waste agency and external laundry once in 6 months.
  • To undertake any other work assigned by the Head of the Department.
  • To monitor and track patients with intravascular catheters, urinary catheters, surgical wounds and ET tubes.
  • To coordinate with central sterile supply department and monitor all departmental functions of the CSSD technician.

Effectively contributes to the Quality, Development & Well-being of the Nursing Team

1. Training for the Nursing Team:

Departmental Induction| Process & Ongoing training | Developmental Training

  • Departmental Induction:
  • Ensure all new joinees, based on work experience, and assessed practical skill, are inducted and oriented to the Motherhood Hospitals Nursing SOPs.
  • Process Training & Ongoing Training:
  • Ensure regular functional training is conducted as per calendar.
  • Train the staff on crash cart checking, high alert cupboard, back-up pharmacy, narcotic cupboard.
  • Educates technical and patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments via in-service training and workshops.
  • Ensure standardized training material, evaluation and performance improvement plans are consistently followed.
  • Developmental Training :
  • Perform clinical assessments for Nurses and provide Certificate of Competency when required.
  • Manage specialized Certification Programs to build competence.
  • Assist in identifying hi-performers; co-create extended skills customized learning plans, enabling career growth and retention; facilitate creation of the nursing talent pipeline.
  • Assist with improving performance of average and poor performers, monitor through structured learning & evaluation plans.

2. Structured Functional Content:

  • Create standardized learning material, evaluation tools and ensure all Unit trainers are trained to effectively deliver sessions.
  • Collaborates with medical providers, patient care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula.
  • Develop and/or assist in the provision of innovative learning opportunities for staff.
  • Foster inquiry, critical thinking and research skill acquisition among the nursing workforce to advance nursing practice and evidence based client care.

3. Standardized Nursing Care:

  • Conduct assessments, ensuring all Nurses are functionally competent, identify areas of focus and ensure low scoring Nurses are brought to standard through a structured learning plan.
  • Periodic observation & supervision in patient care areas.
  • Track medication errors |incident reports| sentinel events.
  • Check patient records.
  • Meet patient relatives.
  • Apply critical reasoning and professional judgment to nursing practice issues/decisions.
  • Provide clinical coaching and mentorship to nursing in accordance with legal, ethical, culturally safe and professional standards.
  • Track compliance to SOPs; de-brief individual/team on outliers and corrective plans.

4. Quality Improvement:

  • Participate in the development and review of clinical guidelines.
  • Member of Quality Committees at Units.
  • Work in collaboration with the Quality/Risk team; act to identify and minimize organizational clinical risk.
  • Ensure ongoing audit and evaluation of the effectiveness of nursing practice in response to patient/ client needs.

5. MIS:

Generate reports on Training; Performance; Quality

Preferred candidate profile

Strong functional /Clinical Skills, Infection control practices.

Ability to plan & execute work, aware of NABH & Nursing Excellence standards; Ability to document accurately; MS skills

Supervisory Skills; Team Management; Communication Skills; Interpersonal skills; Problem Solving & Decision making; Ability to anticipate emergencies; patient and calm especially during emergencies.

Process adherence; audit compliance; employee vaccination; medication safety; documentation; NABH & NE certification compliance.

Zero numbers of Hospital Acquired Infections and above 90% IC compliance.
