Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Adheres to all safety measures related to patient care and self-protection.
  • Competently handles all equipment and devices used in patient care within the NICU.
  • Reviews doctors notes and the drug chart upon admission and takes necessary action.
  • Prepares nursing care plans and provides effective bedside nursing care.
  • Ensures all investigations are completed as advised by the doctor, and that reports are available on time for the doctors review and further guidance.
  • Assists doctors during procedures, dressings, and rounds.
  • Ensures all equipment is functional and serviceable at all times.
  • Is aware of and complies with the narcotic policy.
  • Maintains infection control by monitoring personal hygiene, patient hygiene, and environmental cleanliness.
  • Ensures parents adhere to infection control protocols, including hand washing and changing attire before entry.
  • Maintains accurate and complete medical and nursing records as per protocol.
  • Manages waste segregation and disposal in accordance with policy.
  • Oversees inventory management of drugs and consumables, ensuring minimal wastage.
  • Implements the visitor policy and ensures visitors are briefed on the safety of personal items and infection control requirements.
  • Monitors pharmacy indents, checks received medications, and stocks the patients bedside locker and medication trolley appropriately.
  • Monitors drug administration in accordance with the Drug Administration Policy.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of gestational age assessment and the specific challenges associated with premature, post-mature, small for gestational age (SGA), and large for gestational age (LGA) neonates.
  • Understands medication dosage calculations, including adjustments based on weight and body surface area.
  • Follows universal precautions as per the unit protocol.
  • Assists doctors in the management of asphyxiated neonates, including resuscitation and stabilization.
  • Has complete awareness of APGAR scoring and its interpretation.
  • Ensures the safety and security of neonates by consistently practicing appropriate safety measures.
  • Assists doctors in the following procedures using properly prepared and sterile procedure trolleys:
    • Venipuncture
    • Lumbar puncture
    • Endotracheal intubation
    • Catheterization of the umbilical artery and vein
    • Peripheral IV and arterial line insertion
    • Intercostal drain (ICD) insertion
  • Encourages, educates, and assists mothers with breastfeeding.
  • Reassures and educates attendants on breastfeeding, supplemental feeding, safety measures, and the effects of medication.
